This car was acquired in 2006 after being in storage for over 20 years. Upon researching the chassis number #180 it was discovered that it is one of a series of 1968 911T models that were slated for homologation for racing in FIA Group 2 series. The 911T models was chosen by the factory since it was the lightest of the 911 series model and therefore ideal for “sports purpose” conversion as a 1968 911 T/R. Based on this, we set out to build it to factory specifications as a 68 T/R. There was extensive rust which we repaired with replacement panels. The original engine and transmission were removed and preserved in storage. In its place, we used a 67 aluminum case which we modified for racing utilizing the original 66mm stroke and enlarged the openings to 89mm bore which resulted in a 2.5 liter displacement using using JE pistons and Mahle cylinders. A special grind Elgin-289 camshafts was slected which provides higher torque and horsepower. We rebuilt a 72 911S heads modifying it for twin plug conversion using the rare Marelli 12 plugs distributor. For induction, we used Webers 46mm IDA mated to a 906 magnesium intake manifold and a twin outlet open exhaust. This combination produced an engine that puts out 255 horsepower at 7500 rpm. We utilized twin oil coolers set up in the front fenders as homologated by the factory for the 911R and 911T/R. The front wheels are the original 15X6 Fuchs and we opted to run wider 15X8 reproduction Minilites in the rear since we opted to use the flares from a long wheel base model and modified them further to fit the 8” wider wheels and mated to a fiberglass rear bumper. Koni double adjustable shocks are used front and rear and we installed the 100 liter factory fuel tank. The dash has a 10,000 rpm tach with a 250 kph speedometer and a flat spoke vintage Momo steering wheel. We installed reproduction race bucket seats along with a reproduction 911R roll bar from Roger Hamlin Fabrication. This lightweight 68 T/R weighed in at 2,041 lbs. |
